World's richest investor lives in a $32,000 home
The other day there was a discussion in the channel: buy or rent. One of the subscribers wrote that Warren Buffett does not chase square meters and has lived in an inexpensive old house for many years. I decided to find out more about this story. I am sharing my research.
Warren Buffett does reside permanently in his cozy home in the city of Omaha. He bought it in 1958 for $31,500. Today, that house is valued at $1.5 million. That's 45 times the original price.
"Buying my own home is one of my top three most profitable investments in my lifetime," Buffett says with a smile.
He's lived in this house for nearly 70 years. For the chief investor of the world, the value of this place is measured not by square meters, but by decades of family happiness, stability and no need to move.
Let's take a look at what's hiding inside. In the first three photos, you can see the Buffett house from the outside. It's a classic, classic American suburban mansion built in 1921.
The area is 610 meters. 5 bedrooms. Three bathrooms. Two living rooms. Separate study. Terrace. Plot of 60 hectares.
In front of the house is a Cadillac XTS that his daughter picked out for him. Buffett's a conservative. He's 95 years old. He values integrity, so he doesn't change reality to fit trends.
Every year, Buffett holds his famous shareholder meeting in Omaha. In the spring, tens of thousands of investors from around the world descend on his hometown.
In a 2014 guest post, Buffett wrote, "By the way, if you have trouble booking a hotel, try the Airbnb service. It's a good alternative. Hotels make you book for three nights and you only need one. I wish it was me who came up with this business model."
Airbnb responded brilliantly. They held a private contest especially for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders during a meeting in 2015. The prize was three nights at Warren Buffett's parents' house.
This is the house where Buffett was born and raised. It is located near his current home. For the Airbnb contest, they did a professional shoot inside Warren's parent's house.
Even though the promotion was private, the photos still leaked online. The photos show classic interiors from the middle of the last century. Laconic wallpaper. Vintage furniture. Wood-burning fireplace. Library. The space is filled with coziness.
The conservative Buffett has kept photographers and film crews out of his current home. Given that he doesn't like change and has lived near his parents' home in Omaha for many years, I hypothesized that the interiors of his current home might follow the same classic ideals.
I ran old pics of his home through neuron and asked him to freshen them up with a "professional, photo shoot worthy of an interior magazine."
This is most likely what the inside of the Oracle House of Omaha looks like. It is the epitome of "quiet luxury". Where luxury is about time, stability and books.
I'd like to point out that this isn't the only home Buffett owns. In 2018, he sold his fancy beachfront mansion in a luxury village in Laguna Beach, California for $7.5m.
It was a stylish three-story oceanfront home with six bedrooms, terraces and pools. So, grandpa was a real buzzkill. If you ask me, I can do a photo review.
What do you think of Warren Buffett's current modest home?
