Will Smith's Estate
Today I’m going to show you Will Smith’s villa in Los Angeles, where he blended elements of Morocco, Persia, and the American West, and added a dash of Africa.
The estate is nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains on a 60-hectare property. At its center stands the main house, which spans 2,300 m² and features nine bedrooms. Surrounding the property are a private lake, a swimming pool, a tennis court, basketball and volleyball courts, a recording studio, and a private movie theater.
Will Smith’s estate is so large that it has its own ZIP code. Construction of the main house took seven years. Dozens of craftsmen worked on the details: cabinetmakers, plasterers, blacksmiths, and stonemasons. “Everything has to be handmade. We want to feel the love and hard work in every detail,” Smith said.
The central concept of the house is that it has no dead ends. The rooms flow into one another in an endless loop. This is how Will and his wife, Jada, wanted to symbolize their boundless love.
The interiors are filled with warm earth tones and spicy hues. A double-height living room with columns. Fireplaces in each wing. Exposed wooden beams. Four-poster beds. Carved animal figures. Antique doors and paneling were brought from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
The main gate once stood at the entrance to an actual fortress. A round terracotta tub was installed in the master bathroom. Nearby is a Moroccan-style home theater, a meditation room, and a recording studio.
Outside lies a man-made lake with an island and a gazebo, reached by a red bridge. This is Will’s favorite spot. “That’s where I find my answers,” he admitted.
The property features a swimming pool, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, three golf holes, an in-ground trampoline, an eight-car garage, and a gym. And even separate dog houses.
The house cost the family $42 million. It was listed for exactly that amount in 2014. No buyer was found. The listing was taken down. And then something happened that no architect could have foreseen. The couple split up. Jada moved out.
So the house with no dead ends, conceived as a symbol of eternal love, outlasted love itself. Will, meanwhile, still lives there. But now he’s alone.
