How Elon Musk Sold a Haunted Mansion to a Russian IT Specialist for $40 Million
I’ve already shown you the shipping container home where Elon Musk lives in full view of the public. And today, I’ll tell you the story of his latest villa.
Musk bought the Gignecour estate near San Francisco in 2017 for $23 million. 47 hectares of land. A snow-white villa with a pool.
The history of this house began in 1879. At that time, French Count Christian de Gignoux married the daughter of a gold mining magnate and moved with her to California.
A hundred years ago, they built this charming Mediterranean-style mansion.
The villa is impressive: 1,600 square meters, a ballroom with six-meter-high ceilings, two wine rooms, a library, a pavilion with 18th-century Chinese wallpaper, and a swimming pool.
The family owned the house for 150 years, until 2017. The last owner from the de Guigne family decided to sell the mansion for $100 million, but on the condition that he continue to live there until his death. No buyers were found.
After a couple of years of waiting, the price was lowered to $40 million, and the condition that a strange old man would live in the purchased house was removed. That’s when Elon Musk bought the house.
The world’s richest man soon admitted that living in this old mansion was a little scary. Doors open on their own. At night, he can’t shake the feeling that someone is in the house.
In 2020, after announcing that he was giving up all his possessions, Musk put the mansion up for sale. He initially set the price at $37 million, then lowered it to $32 million. For two years, the haunted house couldn’t find a buyer.
Musk then raised the price to $42 million. The deal finally closed for $41 million. The buyer was Kirill Evstratov, a Russian entrepreneur and founder of the fintech company Cardpay.
After this deal, Elon officially no longer owned a single home and moved to Texas into a 35-meter module rented by SpaceX.
