Chagall’s House in Vitebsk
One of my goals is to shoot all the iconic projects and locations in the cities where Whitewill sells real estate. Through photo stories, I try to capture the atmosphere and architectural details of these locations to help our clients find the right place to live or invest.
One of the main goals of a trip to Vitebsk is to see the places associated with the life of Marc Chagall. His childhood home and the art academy where he studied alongside Malevich.
The photos show the house on Pokrovskaya Street. A small, single-story red-brick house where the artist spent his childhood and youth. His father, Zakhar, built this house. Marc was 13 years old at the time.
The Shagalov family was huge. Mark was the oldest of nine children. Yet the entire house consisted of only five small rooms and was no larger than 100 square meters.
There was a grocery store on the street side. Chagall’s mother sold groceries to help support the large family. His father worked at a herring warehouse.
The childhood of one of the most expensive artists of the last century was spent not among collectors and patrons, but amid sacks of flour, cans of grains, the smell of fish, and nine children sharing a few rooms.
When Chagall decided to leave Vitebsk for St. Petersburg, his father was categorically opposed. But in the end, he gave in. He silently tossed some money for the journey under the table.
According to the artist’s recollections, this scene took place right in the living room of the house you see in the photo. Marc picked up the money but promised his father that if he didn’t succeed, he wouldn’t return home.
The interiors were reconstructed based on archival documents and Chagall’s own drawings. After leaving Vitebsk, he depicted his parents’ home from memory. His mother by the stove, the rooms, the furniture, the windows, and the yard. During the war, the building miraculously survived.
In 1997, on the 110th anniversary of the artist’s birth, a museum was opened here. Some of the interior details, tableware, and furniture were donated to the museum by the artist’s family. After visiting this house, you’ll have a better understanding of Chagall.
His flying people, violinists, goats, rooftops, and lovers didn’t spring from Parisian fantasies. This entire magical universe took shape in five cramped rooms in Vitebsk.
