Arkhip Kuindzhi’s Apartment
Yesterday I visited the artist Arkhip Kuindzhi. He’s the one who painted “Moonlit Night on the Dnieper.” His apartment is located on Vasilyevsky Island on Birzhevoy Lane.
Here, in this attic apartment with a scenic view, the artist lived for the last 13 years of his life, from 1897 to 1910.
Kuindzhi rented this two-level apartment, measuring 250 square meters, from the merchant Eliseev. He was drawn to it because it had a separate studio with high ceilings on the top floor.
The windows offered breathtaking views of the Neva River and the Petrograd Side. The artist said that light was the main character in his paintings. In this studio, the light was constantly changing.
Every Thursday, the apartment became the center of St. Petersburg’s art scene. Kuindzhi’s friends would gather here. They would debate painting, play chess, and make music.
An amazing story took place in this apartment after Kuindzhi’s death.
His loved ones were convinced that Arkhip had hardly painted at all during the last twenty years of his life. But after his funeral, when his wife began tidying up his large studio, she discovered 500 paintings there, most of which no one had ever seen before. For the art world, this was a real sensation.
It’s funny that you have to go up to the apartment through the entrance of an ordinary apartment building. People live there; it’s a normal neighborhood.
Real estate in this area costs 600,000 rubles per square meter. Kuindzhi’s apartment with a view would cost a buyer ₽200m.
You, too, can pay a visit to this artist—the apartment is now a museum. Admission is 400 rubles. That’s the price of a single business lunch at “Cafeteria No. 1.” No need to thank me.
