Elon Musk's House—Where the First Trillionaire in History Lives
Last week, Elon Musk took his company, SpaceX, public with a valuation of $1.7 trillion. On June 12, 2026, Musk officially became the first trillionaire in human history. That is more than the combined net worth of the next three billionaires on the Forbes list put together.
In recent years, Musk has been living in a 37-meter modular home in Texas near the SpaceX launch site. He says it’s more convenient for him to monitor the launches that way.
The house cost $50,000. Musk doesn’t even own it; he rents it from his own company.
Walter Isaacson was the first to reveal the actual interior of Elon Musk’s home. He is the biographer who wrote a book about Musk’s life. Walter’s collection also includes biographies of Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and Leonardo da Vinci.
In August 2023, while working on a book about Musk, Isaacson posted a photo on Twitter of the kitchen and living room of the world’s richest man.
Just a few years ago, Musk owned nine homes in California with a combined value of over $100 million. In 2020, he announced that he was selling all of his real estate. He said he had decided to give up his material assets to focus on the mission to colonize Mars.
But the truth is a bit more complicated than the nice story about publicly renouncing private property.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk owns three homes in the West Lake Hills neighborhood of Austin, ranging in size from 560 to 840 meters. The homes are valued at around $35 million.
Musk’s partners, Claire Boucher and Shivon Zilis, as well as 6 of his 13 children, live in this family cluster. The homes are held in trusts, not in Musk’s name.
Musk himself often “visits” the home of his partner Ken Houri, who lives next door, along with his families. Ken is a co-founder of PayPal and one of the closest people in Musk’s inner circle. Houry himself lives elsewhere and does not visit this house. This is a clever way of publicly disavowing ownership.
