Anna Marso, founder of the MARSO studio, told Whitewill why, in premium interior design, it’s important to base the design not on an ideal floor plan, but on the habits and lifestyle scenarios of a specific person.
“I always say: there is no such thing as a perfect floor plan for a property, but there is a perfect floor plan for specific clients.
The guiding principle behind interior design at our studio, MARSO, is “designing for life.” In the premium segment, it’s not enough to simply create a beautiful image—we must base our work on our clients’ lifestyles.
Clients are no longer as interested in “magazine-worthy” interiors as they are in spaces tailored to their needs and designed for the convenience of everyday life. Here, it’s important to take into account a vast number of details: from the purpose of each room and furniture placement to lighting scenarios and even the choice of fabric for the sofa.
A few examples:
• If there is enough space, it’s a good idea to divide the apartment into public and private areas: the master bedroom, children’s rooms, kitchen, living room, dining room, and home office—each in its own separate space.
• Closets by the entrance or a separate walk-in closet? Closets help visually expand the entryway and make the space feel more open. A walk-in closet provides more storage space and allows you to keep everything hidden in a separate room. The choice depends on the specific client’s habits.
• The depth of the sofa, its model, and its placement depend on how the family spends time in the living room. A deep sofa with an ottoman is suitable for those who enjoy watching movies and TV shows. A more compact option with a shallower seat is better for those who use the living room more often for socializing and entertaining friends. What matters isn’t how the sofa set looks on its own, but how it will be used.
• One of the scenarios we’re exploring in detail is the morning. How does the first hour after waking up unfold? Should the couple arrange things so they don’t get in each other’s way? Is a separate area for applying makeup necessary? How should the walk-in closet be organized? Bathtub, shower, or both? The answers to these questions shape the future interior.
• Another scenario is coming home. Where should you put your bag? Where should you leave your keys? Do you need space for a stroller? It’s not enough to know the rules of ergonomics and a set of standard dimensions. It’s important to adapt the space to a person’s actual habits.”
