Intriguing Architecture.
A series of architecture lectures were held last week at the Whitewill Lecture Hall for our brokers. ⠀
For three days we moved from the origins of the first architecture of ancient Greece and Rome through all the major styles to modern times. And we finished with a breakdown of the facades of the Moscow buildings we are now selling. ⠀
We laid everything out and practiced distinguishing between styles, for example, Renaissance from Baroque and Classicism. ⠀
In order for a broker to talk interestingly about historic and modern facades it is important to know the basic terms and to have an eye for detail. By the latter is meant the experience of looking at different buildings and noting with the eye the ways and techniques of certain styles, resulting in the ability to see their intermingling, to distinguish, to speak. ⠀
Here's a little unit deciphering the origin of the names of the major architectural styles.⠀
Gothic is from the Italian gotico - unaccustomed, barbaric. Barbarian, by the way, is a Greek word and means a stranger, someone who speaks an unfamiliar language, looks and behaves differently. ⠀
Renaissance from the French renaissance, "rebirth." The style that replaced the Gothic style.
Classicism comes from the Latin classicus and means "first-class, exemplary". ⠀
Baroque comes from Italian barocco meaning "strange, bizarre, prone to excess". There is also a second version of the name in honor of the pearl perola barroca unusual and irregularly shaped. ⠀
Empire is from the French empire "empire." This "royal style" is distinguished by its theatricality in the design of architectural buildings and interior interiors. ⠀
Eclecticism comes from the Greek ἐκλεκτός "to choose, to gather." How the etymology of a beautiful foreign word, meaning a mixture of styles, at once reveals the point. ⠀
Avant-garde from the French avant-garde, which meant "advance detachment" and was for a long time a strictly military term. ⠀
Modern - predictably comes from the Latin modernus and means "new, modern". And minimalism is from Latin minimus "smallest, smallest". ⠀
We've videotaped all of the lectures, and will now edit and post them for access on Whitewill's internal broker academy. We are preparing these goodies for new strong Moscow brokers who want to develop with us, who feel that they are being trampled on in their serious and mature, but sometimes inert and boring companies. We are waiting to join our team. ⠀
Well, tomorrow we have an interesting lecture about the history of Moscow at the academy. Let's see how the districts of the capital were formed and developed and what are the reasons for the names of those or other significant places and streets.
